What to do when a commercial fridge breaks down

Commercial fridge plant room with steel cold-room door ajar

A walk-in or freezer that will not hold temperature does not wait for a quiet moment. Stock softens, service stalls, and food-safety checks get awkward. This checklist is for hotels, pubs, restaurants, cafés, and shops in Barnstaple, Bideford, and the wider North Devon coast.

1. Confirm it is a refrigeration fault

Check the obvious first: power to the socket or isolator, a tripped breaker, and whether someone left a walk-in door open. If the plant is powered but the air is warm, treat it as a breakdown.

2. Protect stock without making things worse

Move high-risk items to working cold storage if you have spare capacity. Do not pack a working cabinet so tight that return air dies. Keep doors shut on any room that is still fighting to hold temperature.

3. Note symptoms for the engineer

Useful details speed diagnosis:

  • Asset type (walk-in, freezer, display cabinet, ice machine)
  • What changed (warm air, ice build-up, unusual noise, short-cycling)
  • When it started
  • Any recent cleaning, power cuts, or new loading habits

4. Call for breakdown cover

For priority attendance, use our emergency refrigeration callout service or request a refrigeration engineer. Share the town, business type, and urgency.

5. Leave refrigerant alone

Refrigerant handling is regulated. Do not attempt DIY recharging or “top-ups”. Unsafe work can wreck plant and put people at risk.

6. After recovery, stop the next surprise

Ask what failed and whether refrigeration maintenance would have caught it early — dirty condensers and failing fans are the usual preventable causes.
